FAQ

Got questions?

Is my child ready to take piano lessons?

Anyone who shows interest in the piano is ready to learn piano. Fei recommends young children start at the age of 4 to 6 but booking a trial lesson is the most precise way for her to evaluate if your child is ready or not. Music adds much joy to childhood, so it is never too early or too late to begin.

Am I too old to begin piano?

No one is too old to play the piano. Fei has taught children as young as 3 and grandparents who are over 70. Piano learning is a choice one would make for oneself. It is a commitment one makes that each day, a certain time is reserved for you to converse with yourself through music. If you set your mind to do what you love, all the other concerns are just white noise.

Do I need a piano to begin lessons?

Yes. However, there are other options such as getting electric pianos (brands such as Yamaha, Casio, Roland) that can be a short-term enjoyment until the skill catches up and require a better instrument. Another option would be to rent a piano through an instrument store. Check your local options. For students in Vancouver, contact Fei for recommendations for piano rental or assistance to select the most suitable piano. Choosing your perfect piano is like choosing a wedding dress, a nice pair of shoes or your dream car. The process is enjoyable and Fei can guide you through your options based on your budget.

Can I or my child handle the practicing part?

Yes, it is true that most piano learners struggle with the practicing part, and it does not matter if it is a child or an adult. An adult will struggle with the lack of time, busy schedule, etc. A child would prefer always to have playtime than going to the piano. This is why it is easy to find any piano teacher but it is not easy to find one who can inspire you or your child to want to go the piano for practicing. Building music interest is not as easy as it sounds as it requires the family, the child, and the teacher to be on the same page. When everyone is on the same page, each party will understand the expectations, the required commitment to achieve excellence. With the right guidance and inspiration, intrinsic motivation can happen naturally and practice will no longer be as strenuous as one would imagine. Miss Fei also focuses on training students to be smart and conscious pianists from early on. Correct practice habits will steer you right.

How do I start learning?

How do you start? Book a trial lesson with Fei to get her professional evaluation and she will also give you a plan about how you can begin your studies, how she will plan your lessons, etc. You should also plan to have an instrument as regular practice is a must. It would be like buying a car with no wheels if you sign up for lessons without an instrument!

What other opportunities will I get?

Fei will help you or your child to set annual milestones that will help students gain step-by-step experience that is fitting and thus will increase their confidence. Regular performances, studio classes, and ensemble playing are given to all students to participate. Fei also helps her more ambitious students to organize solo recitals at public venues, and prepare for entrance auditions, festival applications, and competitions. She will help you reach as far as you wish. With her global resources, she will also offer a wider perspective on music learning.

On regular basis, Fei enjoys composing music for her students, rewriting the original scores to fit her student's hands and current level. Fei is a Dalcroze-inspired teacher, she often integrates the philosophy of Emile Jaques-Dalcorze in her teaching that focuses on the integration of listening, mind, and body in music learning which often are executed in forms of games and movement. It is much fun and you can expect a fully personalized lesson plan.
